Frequently Asked Questions
What devices does tvChatter work on?
iPhone and iPod touch devices running OS 3.0+.
Can I watch TV within the tvChatter app?
No. The tvChatter app allows for the exchange of user-generated social media only. These media are short text posts from people around the world who use the Twitter platform. tvChatter searches for posts about specific TV programs and compiles them into usable 'tweet streams'. The tweet streams of your favorite shows are viewed in tvChatter on your iPhone or iPod touch as you watch TV programs on another device such as a TV or a PC receiving video streams from services like Hulu, cbs.com, or Fancast. With tvChatter, you can watch shows that are recorded (e.g., on a TiVo or DVR) or broadcast live. The highest volume of 'chatter' will be during a new episode that is broadcast live.
What is a Tweet Stream?
After you choose a TV show from the tvChatter guide, you will see tweets from fellow fans of the show. These people will be located all over the world, have Twitter accounts, and use a number of different Twitter clients (mobile, widget, and web). Their tweets about the show are collected and presented by tvChatter in a scrolling column of text called a tweet stream. You can set the speed of the stream in the Options panel. A single tap on the stream will pause it. Tap again and it starts again. Unlike a video stream, a tweet stream is 100% text. If a tweet in the stream contains a URL (e.g., http://bit.ly/k1yIT), tap on the tweet's lower right icon to view the details pop up for that tweet. The URL will be tappable in this panel. When tapped, the URL will open in tvChatter's embedded web browser.
What is the tvChatter Guide?
The guide is a list of popular TV shows. This list is alphabetically-sorted by default but you can change it to sort by upcoming episode time using tvChatter's options. This guide may change periodically depending on TV programming seasons, televised events, and special requests from our users.
Do I need a Twitter account to use tvChatter?
No. tvChatter has tons of value when used passively. Selecting a TV show from the tvChatter Guide and viewing the tweet stream can be done without a Twitter account. If you want to use the more advanced features of tvChatter such as posting a tweet, replying to an individual's tweet, re-tweeting or filtering on your friends, then you will need to sign in to your Twitter account from within the tvChatter app. When you do this, the app will securely save your credentials for future use. If you want to be automatically signed into Twitter the next time you use tvChatter, be sure to keep the “Remember Me” option set to the ON position. If you do not want your credentials to be saved, you can delete them in the Options screen.
Can I get a Twitter account from within tvChatter?
No. To get a Twitter account, please visit www.twitter.com/signup in any desktop browser or visit m.twitter.com/login in Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch. For your convenience, there's a link to the Twitter sign up page in the tvChatter Options screen.
When I post a tweet, where does it go?
All tweets are automatically hash tagged by tvChatter and submitted back to Twitter. They can then be searched using search.twitter.com on the web. They will also appear on your username page on twitter.com. Each show in the tvChatter guide has a unique hashtag. For example, if you are in the American Idol tweet stream, and post a tweet, your tweet will include #americanidol. You will not be able to delete this hashtag. For more information on hashtags, please visit www.hashtags.org.
How do I interact with the tweet stream?
tvChatter allows you to play and pause the tweet stream and supports contextual @replies and re-tweets (RT). To pause the tweet stream, simply tap the screen. To play, tap again. To reply and re-tweet, tap on the tweet's lower right icon to view its details pop up. When you do this, you will have two options. One is to reply publically to the tweeter. The other is to re-tweet this tweeter's post.
How many characters am I allowed per tweet?
140 minus the characters needed for the hashtag, @username, and/or RT.
Can I filter out tweets from the stream?
Yes. If you want to see what your friends are tweeting about per TV show, tap the Options button. Within Stream Options, you will see “Filter Tweets”. Tap this and you will be able to choose “Just From the People I Follow.” Tap this and then tap the Back button. If the people you follow are tweeting using tvChatter at this time, you will see their tweets in the TV show's tweet stream. To use this filter, you will need a Twitter account and will need to be authenticated.
What if I filter on my friends and the tweet stream is empty?
This can happen. Not to worry. Just invite them to join you by using your existing tools: call them, SMS them, IM them, email them, etc. They will need an iPhone or iPod touch with the tvChatter app installed and choose the same show from the guide. They will also need to choose the “Just From the People I Follow” filter option in the Options panel.
Why are some tweets displayed using different colors?
Your tweets, as well as those of your friends, are displayed with a different visual style to make them stand out from the general public's tweets. You must have a Twitter account and be authenticated for this feature to work. From time to time, tvChatter will host special events with celebrity tweeters. Their tweets will also be displayed with a different visual style. To view celebrity tweets, you do not need a Twitter account.
How do I control the tweet stream?
You can tap on Options and set the default speed using the slider. When you are in the tweet stream, to 'fast forward', drag in the direction of the stream. To pause the stream, single tap on the screen. To start it again, tap again.
When the EPG list shows airing today, what does that mean?
If you see a show in the EPG with a 'today' date, this date is reflecting the time zone of the local iPhone clock. Often this time zone will match what is set in Options for the EPG. If it is not, please go to Options and choose the time zone that you are currently in to match.
How do I align the TV shows in the EPG with my time zone?
Go to Options, and tap on Time Zone. There will be three choices: Eastern, Central, and Pacific. These zones correspond to US national broadcast times and may not reflect the actual times of your specific cable or satellite provider.
